John Kerry's VP choice

Just a random thought that flashed through my brain, but just in case it were to happen, I want to claim credit for writing it first:

John Kerry should pick as his vice-presidential candidate:

Colin Powell

It's no secret that Powell is no longer a favorite on the Bush team (translation: GWB no longer feels he needs Powell's credibility). Powell's views on Iraq are closer to Kerry's than those of Bush. And it would be on helluva political statement, for both Kerry and Powell.

I completely disagree with this. I think Powell's good soldier character has hurt this country. He had a chance to stand up for what's right and he blew it. He lied during his presentation at the UN and he knew he was lying. He has dishonored his country and he is complicit with the Bushies. He continues to be their lapdog.

Why not the Easter bunny or Santa Clause, while you're thinking up stuff that won't happen. SC will have pretty broad crossover appeal, IMO.

It's not that it's not a good idea... It's that (a) Powell would never do it, because he's shown in the past that no matter how bad the Republicans screw him, he's still going to be loyal, and (b) he said he didn't want to run for that kind of office in the last election.

Well, at least I know some people still read here! Do I think this is even remotely possible? No. Is it any more ludicrous than the Kerry-McCain talk? No.

I think Powell has become, to an extent yet to be determined, damaged goods politically. And I think the blame lies with Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld. They used Powell for his (at one time) incredible credibility with the American people, and like a bottle of shoe polish, once it's empty, it's tossed aside.

The problem is that he LET them run roughshod over him. It's one thing to be a "good soldier", but it's another thing to let it get in the way of your dignity. I trusted Colin Powell more than anyone in this administration and he sold me on the war with his presentation to the UN last February. The fact that he knew beforehand that the aluminum tubes were not for nuclear purposes, and the "decontamination" trucks were actually firetrucks. et cetera...is unforgivable. He deserves to go down in flames with the rest of the crooked bastards. He can take his son with him too.
